"Great hotel by the river"
We spent one night at Pestana Porto, and it was a very nice stay. We were met at check-in by a bow-tied waiter, offering us a glass of excellent Port wine. The elevator was spacious, and the porter service prompt.
The room was spacious enough for us, but was on the smaller size. The bathroom was well appointed and roomy. Our room (209) faced an alley and there was no view of the river, but it was very quiet.
The hotel is in a great location, right across the street from the river, and lots of restaurants within walking distance.
We had to leave the hotel at 3:30am, and we got a "live" wake-up call at the requested time, and a taxi was waiting for us when we arrived in the lobby.
Since we had to leave so early, we didn't have breakfast, so we can't comment on the food.
For the few hours we were there, it was great. Hopefully next time we'll be able to stay longer.

"Excellent location, shame about the flood"
The hotel is excellently located in the historic centre of Porto, walking distance across the bridge to the Port Cellars. I would recommend staying here if your time in Porto is limited. Rooms are individual and I would strongly recommend a river view as it is the classical view of Porto, particularly at night. Most other Porto hotels seem to be outside the central area and so less convenient for seeing the key sights.
Unfortunately while we were there the ground floor flooded as the river rose (apparently the Spanish opened the dams further down the river!)
The hotel was overall very good but just seemed to lack that something special that would have made it fantastic. However I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
Beware the driving directions on the website, we got badly lost in Porto trying to follow them!

"Beautiful Place - Magnificent Location"
The Pestana Porto is the best-located hotel in Porto. It is right on the Ribiera on the banks of the Douro River and looks directly upon the Port houses across the river. I stumbled upon this place last year while on business in Porto. I vowed that if I returned, I would stay there.
The hotel is part of a group of buildings classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. While modern in every way, the interior walls of the rooms facing the river are from the 15th century – very cool! The rooms were spacious and beautiful with large clean bathrooms. The rooms facing the river (a must if you stay here) have several balconies each and offer truly spectacular views.
The hotel offers discounted parking at a nearby underground garage, but we found a spot on the street for free. A walk to the port house is a pleasant 10-minute journey as are most of the major historical sites. The Ribiera is loaded with cafes and restaurants, so finding a nice place to eat is as simple as a short walk.
If you are looking for a wonderful hotel with a view that you will never forget, the Pestana Porto is it.
